Open letter by Dr. Mohammed Al-Madhoun to the Conference of Supervisors of Palestinian Affairs in Cairo

Open letter by Dr. Mohammed Al-Madhoun to the Conference of Supervisors of Palestinian Affairs in Cairo

It is your responsibility to support the refugee cause by continuing to fund and revitalize UNRWA to assume its responsibilities toward the Palestinian people.

Head of the Hamas's Division of Refugee Affairs and the Popular Committee for Refugees sent an open letter to the Conference of Supervisors of Palestinian Affairs in its 108th round, which has been held since Sunday evening and over five days, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Al-Madhoun addressed members of the conference by saying:

It is a matter of sadness and sorrow that your conference coincides with the centenary of the UN ratification of the draft British Mandate for Palestine on July 22. This Mandate is a cosmetic name for colonialism that encouraged the catastrophe of the Palestinian people in 1948.

One hundred years after the decision of the British Mandate over Palestine, the Palestinian people are still paying the price for this international sin. The Zionist occupation of the Palestinian land continues, and the catastrophe of the displacement of millions of Palestinian people takes place every day.

It is your responsibility to preserve the political dimension of UNRWA as an international witness to the Palestinian Nakba and to reconsider the focus on the world’s demand to implement the right of return stipulated in UN resolutions. It requires you to work to secure sustainable financial support for UNRWA, and to stop preoccupying everyone with its financial crisis, in favor of being preoccupied with the issue of return. And by implementing the UN resolutions to end the suffering of millions of refugees scattered in exile and camps, the Palestinian is not destined to live in a tent, and the Palestinian was not born to inherit the suffering of the Nakba, which had time to end with return.

We have no concern about the renewal of UNRWA's mandate for a new three years, which is scheduled to vote at the end of this year, and which will last until June 2026, simply because maintaining UNRWA and carrying out all its obligations is in fact maintaining the continuity of security and stability in the region.

However, in light of the exacerbation of UNRWA’s financial crisis, and its inability to fulfill its obligations towards millions of refugees whose suffering increases day after day from poverty, unemployment, and lack of hope, the collective action of millions of refugees has become an inevitable option to take their rights into their own hands and implement the right of return with their bare chests.

The adherence of the refugees to UNRWA is not clinging to the shadow of the tent and the humiliation of the booth, but in fact it is clinging to the right of return, and clinging to reliance on the United Nations to implement its decisions that guarantee the implementation of this right that has been suspended for more than 74 years, so do not leave the refugees without hope, and do not cut off the last threads of light.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Madhoun- Head of the Division of Refugee Affairs and the Popular Committee for Refugees.
