Appreciates German support for UNRWA, demands sustainable international assistance

Gaza, (drah)--

The Popular Committee for Refugees (PCR) highly appreciates Germany's support of EUR 20 million to the updated COVID-19 Flash Appeal released by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The PCR takes this opportunity to appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to demand action through his vital role to secure sustainable and adequate financial support to the UNRWA to help improve the lives of millions of Palestinian refugees in increasingly volatile and difficult political and social situations, especially to prepare and respond to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), in light of the immediate priorities and financial requirements for the health and other services related to the epidemic in the UNRWA's five fields of operations Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank, including Jerusalem, in addition to the regular needs of the UNRWA Programme Budget.

The Popular Committee for Refugees also call on Guterres to allocate the UNRWA budget within the United Nations' general budget to help it overcome the chronic budget deficit, which declined in 2019 from 167 million dollars to 90 million, where UNRWA received $ 77 million from more than 20 countries and partners, including amounts that were transferred to them by countries that have frozen their remaining contributions for this year.

Supporting UNRWA to help it provide humanitarian relief to millions of Palestinian refugees until returning to their homes and lands is a political, humanitarian and ethical duty for Western countries that have been silent on their displacement from their lands in favor of establishing a racist and fascist entity on their land and homes.
