Mueen Abu Okal, chairman of the Popular Committees for Refugees (PCR) in the Gaza Strip, confirmed during the TV program Huna Filasteen- (Palestine is here) on Al-Aqsa TV, that UNRWA's hints to cut its services is a real danger that might cause a real explosion inside the camps.
Okal expressed fear over the increasing austerity measures by the UNRWA, which might lead to further decline in services.
Okal indicated that every year, some UNRWA services stop due to the financial crisis, as UNRWA's financial deficit reached $ 446 million for the year 2018 and was able to cover the financial deficit in full.
Okal explained that with the fiscal deficit for the year 2020 reaching about one billion dollars, it will lead to reducing some of the vital services that the refugees benefit from, if the required amounts are not provided until the end of next April.
Okal stressed that the Popular Committees for Refugees will not allow the reduction of UNRWA's systematic services and demanded that UNRWA should remain committed to its obligations according to the mandate granted to it by the United Nations, warning of the consequences of the continuous deterioration in the level of services provided to refugees in all sectors, especially education and health care.
He appealed to the international community to provide "permanent sources of funding to the United Nations agency in order to overcome the budget deficit, in order to ensure that its responsibilities towards Palestinian refugees are fulfilled".
